Cinema Nosso is a socio-cultural non-profit film school operating in the heart of Rio de Janerio, Brazil. It was first created informally in 2000 - then under the name Nós do Cinema - from the casting process for the film "City of God" directed by Fernando Meirelles and Katia Lund. At that time it was a way for the young people who were actors in the successful feature film to rise up and create themselves as leaders in their community. The goal was to produce films with relevant themes to their own social-cultural lives and create a pathway into the niche market of cinema.

The audio-visual classes available to the public began in 2002. In 2005, the organization began to prioritize the integral development of young people and created activities to stimulate reflection and respect for diversity, for plurality and popular culture.

In 2007, Cinema Nosso opened a new space in Lapa, Rio de Janeiro's centre, which hots animation labs, post-production services, and a theater space with capacity to seat 59 people as a screening. In 2009, the Producer school opened which aims to encourage entrepreneurship and to develop professional skills in youth by enabling its experience in the audiovisual market.

Cinema Nosso is an organization that has more than ten years experience in audiovisual education; 3,500 students in the capital and around greater Rio area; 98 different course types have been held; 157 workshops; more than 159 short films produced; Two feature films; hundreds of public screenings in the private theater; participation in national and international festivals (England, Spain, Venezuela, Bolivia, Argentina, Chile, Senegal, Portugal, Italy, France, USA, Germany, Peru and Brazil) and has worked on co-productions with São Paulo Senegal, as well as in Lisbon, Chile and the United States.

In 2014 Cinema Nosso started a project in the favela, City of God, called "Anima Aqui", offering animation workshops, audiovisual recreation and movie clubs to youth. The imagination and creativity Cinema Nosso has witnessed from these kids through developing skills in the audiovisual world has been astounding.

Cinema Nosso invests in educational activities which allows for youth who do not have regular access to opportunities, to have and create a cinematic experience of their own.

Mission: "Extending the cultural universe and contribute to the development of critical thinking of children, adolescents and young people from the popular classes through the audiovisual language."

A personal note from Luis

My father followed one of the biggest thought-leaders in Brazil: a politician called Leonel de Moura Brizola, the same politician who brought to the political scene one of the greatest thinkers of Education and of contemporary society called Darcy Ribeiro, this same Brizola elected the first Black Senator of the Brazilian Republic and provided to the people of Rio de Janeiro, especially the poorest, numerous accomplishments. It was because of Brizola that I became interested in politics and I got to study political plays, and from there I ended up on the set of a feature film.
There I met a dear friend Katia, a brilliant woman who held out her hand when I was 22 years old. Katia essentially gave me the keys to the South Zone tunnel. Before that I had never entered in a house in Ipanema, Katia's house was the first. With her I was able to make my own first film and the best of all the opportunities was to create Cinema Nosso!
Today, we have created Jabuti Films, a production company that aims to invent a different way to produce audiovisual dialogue with social factors and for the environment. Building an atmosphere of social company that may in the near future sustain the actions of all our training structure in Lapa, City God, Amazon Forest and Paraíba, enabling these young people to connect with people from different places of this planet so that they can always learn about diversity and even more, that they can always be seen by their many capacities and not by their needs that are only fruit of irresponsible behavior of those who refuse to look at all sides and surrender of heart, as Rise Up is doing.
I am personally very motivated by the beginning of a new era in animated audiovisual world with the possibility of creating the largest platform of environmental documentaries of the planet.
What unites us is the work between Rise Up & Care, Cinema Nosso, Jabuti Films, and all the partners we connect with to share their good stories is the true value of how it generates pleasure to those who are involved and exists to change people's lives and contribute to a better and equitable world for all.
Long live Rise Up & Care!
